In August, I began an extensive grant application process with a clear goal in mind: to make long-term infrastructure improvements that strengthen safety, expand learning opportunities, and support Chickadee Ridge Early Learning Center in operating at a higher standard of licensure.
Running a high-quality early learning program—especially one rooted in family-focused care and community values—requires thoughtful planning, compliance with state regulations, and ongoing investment in both indoor and outdoor environments. This grant represents an opportunity to do just that.
From Planning to Submission
The grant process began in August and required months of preparation, documentation, and coordination. By early December, the application and all required supporting materials were completed and formally submitted. This included detailed information about the program, the current learning environment, regulatory considerations, and projected costs associated with the proposed improvements.
The full application will now be reviewed by a Business Oregon grant panel. This is a highly competitive grant, and applications are evaluated based on need, feasibility, community impact, and alignment with program goals.
Proposed Infrastructure Improvements
The estimated project costs focus on infrastructure upgrades designed to directly benefit children, families, and program operations. These include:
- Paving improvements to create safer, more accessible outdoor spaces for daily play and learning
- Fencing upgrades to enhance supervision, safety, and compliance with licensing standards
- Expanded outdoor learning and play environments that support gross motor development, nature-based learning, and inclusive access
These improvements are not cosmetic. They are foundational changes that allow the program to safely serve children while meeting and exceeding regulatory expectations.
Supporting a Higher Standard of Licensure
One of the most important outcomes of this project is its role in supporting operation under a higher standard of childcare licensure. Higher licensing standards mean stronger safety measures, improved environments, and greater accountability—benefits that directly impact children and families.
Infrastructure matters. Well-designed outdoor spaces and secure boundaries allow educators to focus on what matters most: responsive care, intentional learning, and meaningful relationships.

Chickadee Ridge Early Learning Center is committed to providing family-focused tuition options and supporting working families, including participation in programs such as ERDC. Investing in infrastructure is an investment in long-term stability, quality, and access.
This grant application reflects a belief that early childhood programs deserve the same level of planning and investment as any other essential community service. Safe, engaging environments support healthy development, educator retention, and positive outcomes for children.
What’s Next
The application is now in the review phase, and while the grant is highly competitive, submitting a strong, complete proposal is an important step forward regardless of the outcome. The process itself has strengthened long-term planning efforts and clarified priorities for future improvements.
